About Tokyo IQRA International School
Tokyo IQRA International School (TIIS) is an Islamic international school in Tokyo dedicated to nurturing students in faith, knowledge, character and academic excellence.
Established in 2014, TIIS was founded to serve the growing needs of Muslim families in Japan by providing children with a quality education in an environment where their Islamic faith, identity, and values are respected, strengthened, and lived every day.
Today, the school continues this mission under the Japan Muslim Education Trust (JMET), a non-profit organization committed to supporting and developing Islamic education in Japan.
More Than Academic Education
At TIIS, we believe education is about much more than completing a curriculum or preparing students for examinations.
Our aim is to nurture the whole child — spiritually, intellectually, morally, socially, and physically.
We want our students to grow as Muslims who:
- know and worship Allah with understanding and sincerity;
- develop a strong connection with the Qur’an and Sunnah;
- demonstrate good character, responsibility, and respect;
- think critically and seek knowledge with curiosity;
- achieve strong academic foundations;
- develop confidence in their Muslim identity;
- communicate and cooperate effectively with others;
- understand the society and world in which they live; and
- use their knowledge, abilities, and opportunities to benefit others.
For us, Islamic education is therefore not confined to Qur’an or Islamic Studies lessons. Islamic values and worldview should shape the entire educational experience — how students learn, how people treat one another, how responsibilities are fulfilled, and how knowledge is understood and applied.
Islamic Values and Identity
TIIS is rooted in the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah, as well as the mainstream tradition of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah.
Our students learn the Qur’an, Islamic Studies, Arabic, and other areas of Islamic knowledge while being encouraged to apply what they learn to their daily worship, manners, relationships, and decisions.
We seek to develop an Islamic identity that is grounded, confident, and balanced.
Students are taught to value the rich scholarly tradition of Islam, respect legitimate differences of opinion, avoid unnecessary division, and approach others with wisdom and good character.
Academic Excellence
Alongside Islamic education, TIIS provides a broad international academic program designed to build strong foundations in subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Japanese, and the humanities.
As students progress through the school, they are prepared for internationally recognized academic pathways, including Cambridge IGCSE.
We encourage students not only to remember information, but also to understand, question, analyze, solve problems, communicate ideas, and become independent learners.
Our goal is to help students develop the knowledge and skills necessary for their future studies, professional lives, and meaningful participation in society.
Growing as Muslims in Japan
Being an Islamic school in Japan carries a particular responsibility.
Our students are growing up within Japanese society while belonging to a diverse global Muslim community. They need the confidence and skills to participate positively in the society around them without losing their Islamic principles or identity.
TIIS therefore seeks to help students develop:
a strong Muslim identity, respect for others, proficiency in languages, cultural awareness, responsibility, and constructive engagement with Japanese society.
We want our graduates to feel comfortable being both committed Muslims and responsible members of the communities in which they live.
Tarbiyah and Character
Character development is central to our educational approach.
Qualities such as amanah (trustworthiness and responsibility), honesty, kindness, discipline, patience, gratitude, humility, courage, perseverance and service cannot be developed through textbooks alone.
They are cultivated through relationships, routines, expectations, worship, reflection, responsibility and everyday school life.
This process of tarbiyah — nurturing and developing the student over time — is at the heart of what we seek to achieve.
School and Family Partnership
We believe parents are the first and most important educators of their children.
The school therefore sees itself as a partner with families in education and tarbiyah, rather than as a replacement for the role of parents.
Strong communication, mutual trust and consistency between home and school provide children with the most effective environment in which to grow.
We also value our connection with the wider Muslim community and recognize that building strong future generations is a shared responsibility.
A Diverse Muslim Community
TIIS serves families from a wide range of national, linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
This diversity is one of the strengths of our school community.
Students learn that the Muslim Ummah includes people of many cultures and backgrounds who are united by faith. We aim to nurture an environment of brotherhood, sisterhood, mutual respect and cooperation, while helping students appreciate both their own heritage and the diversity of others.
Continuing to Grow
Since 2014, Tokyo IQRA International School has grown through the efforts, sacrifices and support of many teachers, parents, students, community members and well-wishers.
Our journey has included both achievements and challenges, and we continue to learn from both.
As the school develops under Japan Muslim Education Trust, we are committed to strengthening our curriculum, teaching quality, teacher development, student support, facilities and educational systems.
Our aspiration is not simply to operate an Islamic school.
It is to continually build an institution capable of nurturing young Muslims who are grounded in faith, strong in character, serious about knowledge, confident in their identity and prepared to contribute positively wherever Allah places them.
Faith. Knowledge. Character. Responsibility.
These principles lie at the heart of the education we seek to provide at Tokyo IQRA International School.
